Legendary Romanian Coach Mircea Lucescu Passes Away at 80
In an official statement, the federation said: “The Romanian Football Federation expresses its boundless regret following the passing of the one who was, is, and will remain an absolute legend: Mircea Lucescu.”
“Our football has today lost not only a brilliant tactician, but also a mentor, a visionary and a national symbol who carried the tricolor to the highest peaks of global success,” the statement added.
The federation described Lucescu’s contributions as a “colossal legacy,” highlighting his impact both as a player and a coach.
During his playing career, Lucescu was celebrated for his elegance and intelligence on the field. He became a symbol of Dinamo Bucurest, winning seven league titles, and captained Romania at the 1970 FIFA World Cup, competing against legends such as Pele and Bobby Moore.
However, it was his coaching career that solidified his status as a football icon. Lucescu is credited with modernizing Romanian football, guiding the national team to Euro 1984, and helping build the foundation for Corvinul Hunedoara’s rise.
Internationally, he enjoyed significant success, capturing European trophies and achieving major victories with Galatasaray and Besiktas in Türkiye, Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, and Romania’s national team. These accomplishments placed him among the most decorated managers in the history of football.
In 2024, Lucescu returned to lead the Romania national team, delivering a flawless UEFA Nations League campaign with six wins in six matches, earning a playoff spot for World Cup qualification.
Romanian FA President Razvan Burleanu commented on the loss: “It is a dark day for Romania and for world football.”
Burleanu added: “We have lost a man who lived through and for football every second of his life. Mircea Lucescu was not just a coach, but a teacher of life for entire generations of players.
“He loved this sport more than anything, and his impact on our football is immeasurable. In these difficult moments, our thoughts are with his grieving family.”
The federation announced that a minute of silence will be observed before matches in Liga I, Liga II, Liga III, and women’s competitions in his honor. It also confirmed that the process of appointing a new national team coach has been suspended indefinitely.
