China Denounces Harm to Children During Mideast Escalation at UN Session

(MENAFN) China strongly criticized actions that target children in conflict zones as US First Lady Melania Trump presided over a United Nations Security Council session in New York, amid escalating violence in the Middle East that reportedly killed dozens of girl students in Iran, according to reports.

The Monday session of the top UN body came two days after US-Israeli airstrikes in southern Iran’s city of Minab reportedly killed many students. This was the first time a US First Lady chaired a Security Council meeting, which focused on “Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict.”

Chinese Ambassador Fu Cong said China “strongly condemns” all acts that target children and urged all parties involved in conflicts to uphold international humanitarian law, protect children from the impacts of war, and respect “the most basic human conscience.”

“Attacks on schools are one of the six most serious crimes against children recognized by the United Nations and should be severely condemned and resolutely resisted,” said Fu, according to a transcript of his statement.

Although Fu did not specifically mention the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and 786 others, including 163 girl students, he called on the international community to hold accountable those responsible for harming children or damaging schools, and to work together to address educational challenges in conflict zones.

Referring to the Gaza Strip, Fu emphasized that the well-being of Palestinian civilians must be prioritized. “The Gaza conflict has cast a dark shadow over an entire generation of Palestinian children,” he said, urging Israel to fully adhere to ceasefire agreements, lift restrictions on humanitarian access, and end the suffering of children.
