Southwest Literacy Committee Receives National Literacy Award on Literacy Day in Saskatchewan

The Southwest Literacy Committee has been announced as the recipient of the Council of the Federation Literacy Award (COFLA) in Saskatchewan today.
This year, the Saskatchewan award recognizes an organization that has demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing literacy initiatives and encouraging families to recognize literacy, in its many forms, to build individual confidence and lifelong success.
"We celebrate the significant contributions of the Southwest Literacy Committee to families in the Swift Current region," Education Minister Everett Hindley said. "Led by longtime literacy coordinator Bula Ghosh, they are an example of what can be accomplished when organizations come together with a shared goal and a commitment to improving literacy and the wellbeing of people in their community."
The Southwest Literacy Committee was established in 2005, in Swift Current, as a collaboration between four community partners who had a shared mission - to provide local families with infants with access to age-appropriate books, nursery rhymes, child development information and information around the importance of play.
This project, known as "Books for Babies," was so well received that more organizations joined the Southwest Literacy Committee and the project grew to include literacy kits for toddlers and preschoolers. In addition to offering a range of literacy kits, the committee expanded their program offerings and developed the Grocery Store Literacy Project, always with the goal of making literacy fun and engaging for families.
The COFLA was created in 2004 by Canada's premiers and has been awarded annually since 2005 in recognition of outstanding achievements, innovative practices and excellence in literacy in each province and territory.
